The Black Panther Party For Self Defense - 1199 Words

In October 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party for Self Defense and soon thereafter drafted the Ten Point Platform which drove the ambitions of the party. Each point was meant to rectify one of the oppressive actions suffered by black communities nationwide but all boiled down in to the tenth point: â€Å"We want land, bread, housing, education, clothing, justice.† The platform established the organization as one dedicated to changing the community rather than the system. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), and even the Nation of Islam all had recognized the same issues, but did not have a consistent approach on how to address them. The Black Panther Party drew attention from the FBI as a â€Å"Black Nationalist – Hate Group† under the Counterintelligence program (Cointelpro). Some of their actions forced lawmakers to make a change, but not exactly in favor of the Panthers. Politicians were not the only one’s affected by the Black Panther movement; the black communities in which they were based received programming meant to empower the people. Unlike the other social activist groups prevalent in the 60’s, the Black Panther Party was more focused on changing the living conditions for people in their communities than on changing the nation’s racial inclination. Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously†¦show more content†¦On my current diet, I consume excessive amounts of refined carbohydrates and added sugars. These types of carbohydrates do not contain the necessary nutrients, needed by the body for optimal health. Also, consuming excessive amounts of these types of carbohydrates may result in obesity. The DRI recommends that I consume a minimum of 25 grams of fiber daily. My current intake of dietary fiber falls short of meeting my recommended amount. Fiber is important in a healthy diet. It is beneficial in maintaining good digestive health and with prevention of diseases, including colon and rectal cancer. Adequate amounts of fiber also decrease the risk of heart disease by lowering the amount of LDL cholesterol within the blood. My current caloric intakes, varies from day to day. On some days, I exceeded the DRI’s recommendations; however, my caloric intake most often fell below the recommended amounts. Both of these are important in maintaining a healthy body weight. Consuming too many calories can cause weight gain. In addition, consuming inadequate calories can have the same effect. Since calories are used as the main source of energy within the body, consuming too few calories can slow down the body’s metabolism, making it difficult to maintain a proper body weight. Although the DRI has not determined a set value for fat intake, my intake of fat is high. Okonkwos pride ultimately causes his downfall. Achebe expresses Okonkwo as one of the greatest men of his time (Achebe 6). All while indulging his already great honors, Okonkwo continues to gain a prestigious manly reputation. He was a man of action, a man of war as described by Achebe (Achebe 9). Okonkwos stature lead to his narcissistic opposition, which consequently becomes the most common type of tragic flaw; arrogance resulting from excessive pride (Handbook of Literary Terms). In return, Okonkwos flaw triggers numerous aversions towards the changing Igbo culture. As the story unfolds Okonkwo fails to tolerate the newly prevailed traditions, bringing him to mourn the loss of the past, such as him feeling that he has lost his manly reputation (Chua 90). Sadly, Okonkwo is flamed with anger. After meeting the sweet-tongued messenger who invited him to the meeting with the District Commissioner, Okonkwos anger engulfs him, causing him to kill the messenger in hopes of restoring his faded repute throughout the villages (Achebe 140). As Achebe continues to portray his story, he generates an abrupt disappointment for Okonkwo, when he soon realizes the villagers no longer support him. Even worse, Okonkwo admits that he will not succeed in saving his village from the British colonists. Okonkwo faces his downfall, caused by blindness towards his arrogance. After his painful disappointment, for not only himself, but the villagers as well, Okonkwo feels as if he has become Just like his father- improvident (Achebe 3). In result, Okonkwo hangs himself, to escape from the vulnerability. Achebe ends the story, leaving the audience feeling great pity for Okonkwo. Taking everything into account, Achebe certainly provides many ideas throughout the novel that embrace and support Aristotles definition of a tragedy, including the fall of a tragic hero.
